A Walk With Our Plant Relatives

Come explore Cultural Keystone Species at 21 Acres with local Indigenous Scientist, Linzie Crofoot (Tlingit/Colville-Oanogan).
During our walk you will be introduced to a variety of native plant relatives that local Native peoples have maintained relationships with through their traditional food and medicine systems since time immemorial.

Guest Speakers

David R. Montgomery, professor and author, will speak on soil. David is a MacArthur Fellow and professor of geomorphology at the University of Washington. An author of award-winning popular-science books, he has been featured in documentary films, network and cable news, and on a wide variety of TV and radio programs. His books have been translated into ten languages. He lives in Seattle with his wife, and co-author, Anne Biklé. Their latest book, What Your Food Ate: How to Heal Our Land and Reclaim Our Health, was published summer 2022. Connect with them at dig2grow.

James Gagliardi, director of the Bellevue Botanical Garden. Gardens can be an oasis for many pollinator and bird species. Join James as he shares stories of creating successful habitats and educating the public while showing beautiful images of gardens he has worked in. During his lecture he will teach about plants you can use in your own garden to support a healthy ecosystem for wildlife. 12:30 p.m. in the 21 Acres Library.

Bob Gillespie, a retired entomologist and volunteer at Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Center, and with the Salal Chapter of the Washington State Native Plant Society,  will share his insight on insects and pollinators. Bob’s goal is to help people develop pollinator habitat around their homes. Bob has an extensive collection of insects that will be available to view and is of interest to all ages. 2:00 p.m. in the 21 Acres library.
